The Main Street Coffee House got me for a concert on Friday, August 7th, 7:00pm. Come for coffee (or tea, or whatever, you know) and enthusiastic music :)
Background noise is the issue. The shotgun mic I mount on the camera is very directional and yields pretty good sound, but only "pretty good." The dynamic range is a little lacking, very heavy mid and high, more for dialog than music.
Plus, the mic is showing its age and buzzes sometimes, even with an RF filter on the wire. Could be the connection at the camera, too, but I haven't taken the time to find out.
The camera-top mic would just pick up everything and can't be used.
What I'd REALLY love to have is an XLR adapater (http://tinyurl.com/mv34sy) so I can connect my good mics right to the camera, but that'll come in time. It's on my shopping list ~after~ a decent tripod.
