The Main Street Coffee House got me for a concert on Friday, August 7th, 7:00pm. Come for coffee (or tea, or whatever, you know) and enthusiastic music :)
I wasn't planning to, but I certainly could try. I tried once before but the signal coming off the board was so hot the audio was useless. If I can get in the place some afternoon and experiment I just maybe could make it work.
I defer to your expert opinion, but just out of curiosity (because I might want to do something similar in the futuer): is the background noise too much to just rely on the camera's mic? What I've heard of just the camera audio wasn't bad; not as good as running through an actively monitored board, but certainly passable.
Background noise is the issue. The shotgun mic I mount on the camera is very directional and yields pretty good sound, but only "pretty good." The dynamic range is a little lacking, very heavy mid and high, more for dialog than music.
Plus, the mic is showing its age and buzzes sometimes, even with an RF filter on the wire. Could be the connection at the camera, too, but I haven't taken the time to find out.
The camera-top mic would just pick up everything and can't be used.
What I'd REALLY love to have is an XLR adapater (http://tinyurl.com/mv34sy) so I can connect my good mics right to the camera, but that'll come in time. It's on my shopping list ~after~ a decent tripod.
