Dear FList, I could use some help.

Michelle and I cannot agree on a direction for the logo for Map's Edge Media. I would like to enlist your help in selecting a direction: which one of the following works better for you and why? Or, if you have an opinion for either, I'd like to know that, too. (Or, do you have a better idea you'd like to volunteer?)

Remember, this logo has to work on letterhead as well. Neither of the choices is probably the final, and they're in no particular order.

While number one carries a certain amount of ... weightiness... about it, I vote for number 2 for the very same reason.

Number 2 has an elegance about it that draws the eye from the spiral to the Logo, whereas it took my brain a few milliseconds to connect the Map to the letter M.

Of course, that could be because my brain is getting older...

Regardless of hardened arteries in mi cabeza, I personally like the elegance and simplicity of number 2. It says something about the company... 'as fancy as you like, without a lot of frills'.

I like Choice 1 - the folded-map image works well with your name. Choice 2 might work better if the curled line had a compass rose at the center - another play on the name.

My vote is for the second one, if only because I have something of an issssssssue with using images in place of letters. No good reason, just a hangup. And my tally mark also goes in the "Ooh! Compass rose! Very nice!" column. :)

Of the two choices, #2 is the better one at this stage. The folded map "M" doesn't translate immediately to the eye, so at first glance it looks like "Ap's Edge."

The Compass Rose idea mentioned by ladyniniane has some merit. Be wary if you use this idea though, and not to make it entirely too frilly.

#1 because I like the font better. But I'm not a big fan of the descenders p and g going through the thick underline. If the underline were a bit lighter weight it would look smoother to me. Perhaps the same thickness of the middle edge of the map's M.

+1 for the second logo. Simplicity trumps the folded map.

Another vote for #2. Also, rather than a complete compass rose, I might suggest making one of the uprights (on the "p" or"d") a North arrow?

Vote #2. Do think the "Map" needs to be sharper in image. Like the font . Can you do something a little more with the swirl on the left? I think something similar but not as detailed as a compass rose would work there.

I like 2 as well, and second the motions made by others...

I think the curl could easily be swapped for a compass/globe hybrid (denoting the WWW/global aspect), and breaking up the underline so the p and g can sit freely without running into the line. If you opt to go with a compass idea, have the arrow pointing NE, to indicated forward-thinking ideas. :)

Because it would have to work for letter head, stay away from multilayered/shaded graphics, but go more for a line drawing style, allowing for the use of color in that drawing when you're displaying it online.

Here's a thought to confuse the situation further...
Each logo takes into account a traditional map that you, I, and anybody over 40 recognizes.

But what graphic represents a 'map' to the up-and-coming consumers? Will they have as much trouble identifying with a fold or scroll hardcopy map as they do reading an analog clock?

Hm.... Is there no way to make a stylized map that fades out at the edges? Or is that too much for a letterhead logo? I can draw what is in my brain next time I see you if you want....

I have very little discernible aesthetic, but I prefer #2.
