And now...

...I have my own office. After spending close to five years locked in an office with DataGuy, I found a way out.
Oh, yes, Bill can be Machiavellian when he chooses to be.

Our sales girl, hereinafter referred to as SalesGirl, is a sweet kid and pretty good at what she does but she spends a good deal of time on MySpace...or texting on her cell phone...or talking to friends on the phone. Since she came here she had her own office - really the only space that was available at the time - which gave her the freedom to do so.
Personally, I think we've grown more - and explored the possiblity of growth more - than before she was here, but CFO's not taking a paycheck yet and doesn't see why she should if she's going to blow so much time. He was talking about firing her. That would have been bad.
So, I suggested to DataGuy (who is also SalesGuy), "Hey, why not move her in here? I'll take the server room, and you can monitor what she does day to day." Then I shut up, and let the seed take root.
So here I am, in my own dark quiet space. My back is no longer to the door. I've got a scented tart on the mug warmer, and I'm all by my lonesome.
It's strictly on a trial basis, I understand that. I can't let my productivity slack off. But the wheels turn slowly here, and maybe it'll be another five years.

The only thing that made it possible was chairs with wheels, so if we were in the office we constantly went back and forth like a set of swings on a breezy day.
The bossman said we weren't supposed to be in the office, anyway; although he always had reason to pull us back in to do - deskwork.
This company provided me with something I never had before.
My own cube with furniture nobody else had used before.
Now I'm in my own basement in my shorts and T-shirt.
Always improving :)
