The Not-So-New Dog

The only reason I go in Katie's room any more is to be growled at. Not by Katie, but by Schipper. I suppose I should beat her half to death for growling at me - alpha-dog that I am - but it's so damn cute I can't bring myself to. (She's nipped me once...that got a "beating.")
Katie and Schipper have formed the bond that Michelle and I had hoped for. When Katie is gone, Schipper lays on our bed and stares out the window, waiting for Katie's return. At night, after Katie is asleep, Schipper jumps up on the bed and sleeps with her.
When we enter the room and Katie's asleep, Schipper growls and tries to put herself bodily between us and our daughter, but the growl is tentative and accompanied with body language that says, "I expect to die any minute for this, but I have to growl anyway..." She crouches low to the blankets, tucks her butt under, and crawls as quickly as she can to protect her charge.
It's funny as hell. I almost feel bad for terrorizing her. Schipper, not Katie.
Schipper and Shiner have come to terms with each other, an uneasy peace that is maintained so long as Schipper remembers who is the Alpha dog and whose food bowl is whose. As a rule, they ignore each other. I didn't expect them to become "friends"...Shiner is not a "friend" kind of dog to other dogs, but at least we don't find her in the kitchen late at night sharpening the knives.
