OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Several popular pizza shops in the metro area are shut down, but not because of a lack of business.
It's because they're in trouble with the tax collector.
The Kansas Department of Revenue said Papa Keno's hasn't been paying its taxes.
KMBC's Jere Gish reported that the Papa Keno's restaurants in both downtown Overland Park and in Lawrence are closed.
"It's always very busy," one Overland Park customer said.
"I'm surprised. I haven't seen a place with a seized sign on it in a while," another customer said. "We hadn't been here in several months, so we were kind of dumbfounded."
The state said the owner of the shop, Greg Kennan, owes more than $170,000 in taxes. So until he pays up, the shop and everything in it are the property of the state.
Some Papa Keno's employees told KMBC they've had their paychecks bounce.
"I'm shocked. I'm absolutely shocked. I was going to bring my daughter down here to have pizza for her birthday. Just absolutely floored," customer Chris Haake said.
There are two Papa Keno's shops in Kansas City, Mo., and they are both shut down as well.
KMBC tried to contact the owner but was not successful.
