Peony Watch

In the 1950's, my aunt brought some peonies from her father's house in Weeping Water, Nebraska. In 1996 (or '97, I can't remember), M moved them from under the maple tree to along the sidewalk down to the driveway. This, then, is what we have this time of year:

At the time they were moved, there were more than 50 eyes.

M has them caged, otherwise, you wouldn't be able to use the sidewalk.

Yeah, when the wind is right, the smell is really nice. They were slowly dying off in the shade of the maple (which you can barely see a hint of in the upper left hand corner of the second picture), but in full sun by the sidewalk they've just exploded.

They are beautiful. My great aunt use to have a whole garden just for peonies, they are one of my childhood favorites

Those are gorgeous. My parents have peonies in the back garden - pink and white. They grow just under what used to be my bedroom window, and I kept my windows open all summer every year so I could enjoy them. They seem to be delightfully hard to kill off. :)

Ooh! Lovely! They remind me of my home in Lamoni, Iowa. We had pink and burgundy and white ones along one whole side of the house.

I always thought that it was the ants crawling all over them that made the blossoms open up. My family sorta snickered at that until I found out that I was right! Early intuition success....
