mapsedge: Me at Stone Bridge Coffee House (Default)

Christmas came early for Michelle (a new, commercial grade, KitchenAid® mixer), and tonight, early for me in the form of a Breville Café Roma espresso machine. I've pulled three double-shots from it, and while tasty I'm still searching for the perfect shot.

CPAP Diaries, Day 5: sucked. I guess these should say, "Night 5", since all the relevant action takes place at night. Go figure. Anyhow, a bad night of chaotic, running, fighting dreams - I know why, and hold no grudges - made for a restless night and at 3:05a.m. the CPAP had to go. Note that my frustration wasn't with the machine, but with my state of mind there was no being patient with the little inconveniences.

We'd planned to go to Union Station to see the model trains but that idea fell through. A hard night makes for a hard morning, and it was like having a migraine without the pain in my head.

Got the website done
- the project I was kvetching about on Facebook late this week - in time to publish it last night (click if you want to see what I do for a living). What no one explained to the client, however, was that when you change the authoritative DNS, it can take up to twenty four hours for the change to propagate, during which time you'll have no website and no email.

I spent twenty minutes on a Saturday night on the phone with the client calming him down. Yes, sir, this is normal. No, sir, I can't switch it back. (More like "won't" switch it back, but you don't say that to a client you want to keep.) No, sir, the process can't be sped up. Take a valium, sir, you're not missing any leads: it's late on a Saturday night. No one's browsing your site hoping to buy a car before noon tomorrow.

Speaking of work, I finally gave up on Homesite. No other editor I've ever used has given me the flexibility and power that Homesite does, but as a 10+ year old piece of software, it hasn't aged well. I've switched to Notepad++, and while it lacks the ease of use and extensibility that my old editor had, it is much more stable on Windows XP SP3. I coupled it with AutoHotkey and I can work nearly as fast as I used to. Speed will come with familiarity, I'm sure. New interface, new shortcuts, etc. I've written about two dozen macros, and have about a dozen left to get me back up to where I was before.

Our future corner? Remains to be seen----------

With the 12th Night Gathering coming up, I find myself with a bit of motivation to finish as much of the unfinished around the house as possible. For the past several days, I've been repairing the arch over the back door, a little every day; it was damaged when the roof started leaking back in July and August.

Then today, late afternoon into evening, I addressed myself to the baseboards in the living room. I'm doing a formal baseboard, which is to say a baseboard that includes toe molding. It's pretty, just takes longer.

Next up, some sort of countertop and corner cabinet in the kitchen on the "coffee side."

The Samoan audio project is nearly done, so there's $50 right before Christmas. Not bad, that.
