Another meme, although I've edited this one somewhat to remove questions I remember having answered before.

  1. smoked a cigarette? - Smoked for ten years. Quit during finals week.

  2. smoked a cigar? - Yes. For smoke you can't inhale it's not bad.

  3. crashed a friend's car? - No, thankfully.

  4. stolen a car? - No. Never needed to, and it's not something I would do anyway unless in extremis.

  5. been dumped? - Yes, on Christmas morning. Yes, it sucked.

  6. shoplifted? - Yeah, but nothing spectacular.

  7. been fired? - Yes, twice. Long stories, both, once for being stupid and the second for...well, being stupid.

  8. gone on a blind date? - Not really, no.

  9. had a crush on a teacher? - Molly Hankins, 7th grade social studies. She looked like Meg Ryan, but with frizzy hair. I saw her years later, and the difference in perspective from child to adult was frightening.

  10. skipped school? - Sure. Senior year, all the damn time.

  11. seen someone die? - Yes. My mother, which if you read my journal at all regularly you already know.

  19. cheated while playing a game? - When I was a kid, sure.

  20. been lonely? - With an absentee dad, a junkie mom, and few friends...yeah.

  21. fallen asleep at work/school? - Oh yeah. If I have one cookie (or any sweet for that matter) at lunchtime, my blood sugar plummets and I'm dead by 2:30 - 3:00 in the afternoon.

  22. used a fake id? - For what?

  23. felt an earthquake? - No, but I'm assured by the Mercers, who experienced one in Taiwan, that it's frighteningly disorienting, like suddenly being very drunk. The ground doesn't shake like in the movies. The likened it to standing on a waterbed in the wobble-room of a funhouse.

  24. touched a snake? - Sure, why not?

  25. run a red light? - Yes, sometimes even on purpose.

  26. been suspended from school? - Never.

  34. felt like dying? - Yes. Recently as a matter of fact.

  35. cried yourself to sleep? - No. I cry, or I sleep.

  36. played cops and robbers? - Not as such. Unless a stormtrooper counts as robber, and Luke Skywalker counts as a cop.

  37. sung karaoke? - Shit no.

  38. done something you told yourself you wouldn't? - Yes.

  39. laughed till some kind of beverage came out of your nose? - No. I've snorted soda into my sinuses from a good guffaw.

  40. caught a snowflake on your tongue? - Kinda bland.

  41. sang in the shower? - Who writes these questions? Do the public schools even teach English anymore? Yes, I've SUNG in the shower.

  43. glued your hand to something? - Fingers yes, hands no.

  44. got your tongue stuck to a flag pole? - No.

  55. cried so hard you laughed? - Yes.

  56. cheated on a test? - Once. It didn't help.

  57. forgotten someone's name? - Every damn day. I've no memory at all. If I don't have regular exposure to someone, or some significant reason not to, I'll forget you before you're twelve feet away. It's not that I'm trying to be rude, there's just not a lot of room left up there.

  58. slept naked? - Unless the kids are sick, it's storming badly outside, in other words, if I have reason to believe I might be getting up over night, that's my preference. Oh, and if it's bloody cold in the house. Then it's knit lounging pants and a "T", but only for warmth.

  59. gone skinny dipping in a pool? - Sure.

  60. been kicked out of your house? - No. It's my goddamn house. Oh, in junior high? No, again.

& people are just too much for me to face
I climb right up to the top of the stairs
& all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof, that's the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Let's go up on the roof....

When I was a teen, one of my summer jobs was on the custodial team of the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan. It's a 5th Ave double mansion converted into a high-end Catholic girls' school. I lived in the servants quarters on the 5th floor of #1 East 91st street, immediately across 5th ave from the Reservoir in Central Park. More than once I spent the night out on the balcony, though the mosquitoes could be pretty fierce.

Gerry Goffin. I love that song.

My roof can be nice, but it gets powerful hot up there. Still, there's a great view - we're on the highest hill in the neighborhood, and I can look down over the houses behind us, to the woods beyond.

I've been thinking of putting an 8 pounder siege cannon up there, just to keep the guy down the street with the loud muffler quiet...

who is Gerry Goffin?

Written, of course, by Carol King. I first heard it done by JT (so it made me think of you) but my favourite version of it is by the Nylons.

"Up On The Roof" was written by Carole King in collaboration with Gerry Goffin. The two were married for nine-ish years.

I've got the sheet music & his name is nowhere on it. Wonder if she got it in the divorce or something? ;-)
