mapsedge: Me at Stone Bridge Coffee House (yorick)

The first week of October I was invited to a Halloween party, to take place on November 1, tonight. Since it was the day after Halloween, I asked if it was a costume party. Yes, I was told, it was a costume party.

I'm going anyway. I like the guy1. And since he's an A.D. that does work for the National Geographic Channel, I want him to keep liking me.

Had my children gone trick-or-treating2, I would have worn jeans. Instead we went out to eat, and I still wore jeans. There's a part of me that still enjoys freakin' out the mundanes with $1000 worth of costuming, but there's another, somewhat louder part of me that can no longer ignore the discomfort of driving a car with sleeves large enough to store watermelons. Not for free, anyway.

I don't like costumes. I can think of few things I'd rather do than go to a party and try to be comfortable moving around, relaxing, and playing an instrument while encumbered by clothing I don't wear that often. I'd much rather be in jeans and a t-shirt than tights and a blouse, especially if I'm going to on a couch in a dude's living room playing an impromptu session3.

Surprised? After all, I made costumes for my living. I ate, drank, slept and awoke with the manufacture of tights and shirts never far away. I did Renaissance Festival for eleven years straight, and a few more off and on after that.

So, maybe that's why I'm costume-averse. I view costumes as something I do with a purpose or for money, and relaxing is neither profitable nor a "purpose."

But I'm going anyway. I like the guy.

1 Gunslinger, from that movie.

2 Trick-or-treating is probably a thing of the past, and not because we don't want to support Satan's holiday4. That's a journal entry I've been letting ferment for a long time, but it's not quite ready for public consumption.

3 Dave is pretty well connected, and there will be musicians there besides me.

4 OF COURSE I don't mean that.  Joke.  Ha ha.  Mainstream Halloween, much like mainstream Christmas, has long since lost whatever religious significance it might once have had, good, bad, or otherwise. The choice to not trick-or-treat comes from dietary concerns.
