mapsedge: Me at Stone Bridge Coffee House (Default)

By way of exposition, I invite you to the website http://www.venganza.org/, which [livejournal.com profile] themadblonde was kind enough to post. Damn funny stuff.

For the record, I'm one of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit crowd. I'm not convinced exactly how personal it is, but I do accept Jesus as a savior. Read that again, because the terminology is important. The people that misunderstand me are the ones that don't get the slight but significant difference between "accepting Jesus" and "accepting Jesus as my personal savior."

Moving on. I saw a coffee mug on the Spaghetti Monster website that I felt needed commenting on. Okay, not the mug, as such, but the caption beneath it. The mug bore a cartoon of the Flying Spaghetti Monster creating mountains, trees, and a midget (funny), and the caption beneath (I guess this was meant as a selling point) "This mug holds coffee and pisses off Jesus."

Now, in my universe, God and Jesus both are sitting up there looking down at us little humans running around, some of us more than others, and wondering just what the fuck happened? Jesus, I'm certain right down to my ten widdle piggies, doesn't give a fig about coffee mugs, t-shirts, sacrilegious humor, intelligent design, Jerry Falwell, or the Kansas School Board. Why should he? In the end, what difference does it make? You either believe, or you don't. Better to believe in something, right? An it harm no one, do as thou wilt. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Don't sound so different, do they?

Like I told my friend Lezlie: Christianity's okay. It's the people that fucked it up. (Insert name of religion of choice, and re-read.)

I can't agree it's necessarily BETTER to believe in something, but I would never insist that it was WRONG to believe. If it is good for you, important to you, has meaning for you, then it is a wonderful, positive thing & I'm all for anyone's right to believe (or not) as s/he sees fit.

& I agree w/ you 100% that if there IS a supreme being (I certainly can't PROVE there isn't), s/he has MUCH better things to do than worry about what our t-shirts & mugs say. ;-)

A quote from the surprisingly moderate QEI: "There is only one faith and one Jesus Christ; the rest is a dispute about trifles."

This one reeeaaaly reaches back, I'll admit. From "Young Sherlock Holmes", it's the curio shop owner (played by Lockwood West) examining the Egyptian blow pipe. You just see this gigantic eye in a magnifying glass, and this scratchy Cockney, "Niiice, oh very nice. Egyptian!"

Oh unfortunately I CAN remember that far back, youngster. I do remember Young Sherlock Holmes and liked it but I'll be damned if I remember many specifics about it.
