"[x] I've eaten breakfast at a Sambo's Restaurant."

We used to have breakfast at the Sambo's on Armour Blvd (?... been too long) in NKC in the 70s. I was mildly surprised when I got out here, given the flap about them in the 80s, to find a restaurant called "L'il Sambos" in Lincoln City, Oregon, a touristy town on the coast right on Hwy 101. The front facade/stoop looks like something from a "Jungle Book" amusement park. Apparently it was never part of the chain, but the decor is eerily reminiscent of it. Wouldn't surprise me if the discrimination thing passed Oregon by, being one of the whitest states by percentage of population.

So, if anyone wants to add a tick to their results they kind of have a chance.

You used to live over off of Southside Ave. in Indep, didn't you? The place at Noland and Fair streets was a Sambos when it first opened.

Heh... yeah, in the summer of 1987-ish. Although my mother worked for Southwestern Bell at the directory assistance office on 23rd street so we traversed that area a lot when I was a kid. I think the Sambo's there was before the start of my cognizance.

I do, however, remember the barber shop on 23rd street that had the stack of men's magazines lying around when we went in there once (once...) for a haircut on mom's payday. Little brown building with white trim. Sat higher than the road by a few feet... in the big dip before you come up to Noland. Probably still there... with the same magazines.
