You don't realize how much space a commercial sewing machine occupies until you move it out.

I have a HUGE L-shaped workstation I bought back in '96 or so - it's 30" deep, and measured from the corner to the edge of each leg of the "L" it's 8' long.  It's moved from place to place, and the last six years it's lived in the offices of my day-job. I moved it there to make room at home for the commercial sewing machines I was going to purchase.  My desks then traded "spread out" for "spread up": when you have a lot of floorspace being used up, vertical makes sense, and I bought another workstation that stacked it's useable space.

What I found, though, was that a vertical desk starts to feel a little like a wall - a wall in a cell.  With the sewing machines going, I sold that one and brought my "L" home.

Because it doesn't quite fit the available space I had to build a shorter section to replace one of the 8'-ers, but it works out okay.  I had the plywood left over from other projects, and it didn't take long to do.  I still haven't hooked up anything but my two computers - workstation and file server.  Tonight I'll probably connect the amp, cassette deck, DVD player, and mixer.  After that, another 2' desk extension for the TV and get that connected in.

I'm settling in nicely.

I used to have one of those "home cubicle" things that I bought at Sam's Club back in '97 or so - it sounds very similar to what you have. In some respects, I miss it (i got rid of it back in '03), but it was very bulky, didn't break down easily for moving/storage and dominated whatever room it was in.

Right now, I have a 6' "folding" table as one arm of my desk and a ~6' desk as the other. It's working at the most minimal of levels for me. I need to find a better solution. Of course, the key here is that I need to have room for at least 2 computers, and sometimes more.

Maybe I should think about designing and building my own custom solution.

This is unrelated to your post, however, are you still able and willing to comvert dad's reel to reel audio to cd? I need to get that started for him...

You bet! I just need a reel to reel I can connect into the system. If I remember right, your dad has one, but if I remember wrong I know my brother does.

He does. And when you have time to come this way and chat with him a bit (if your life ever gives you time *wink*) before beginning the project, I would be immensely grateful.
