Happy Thanksgiving
Nov. 22nd, 2007 21:03It isn't politically correct to celebrate the holiday "Thanksgiving", but I feel exactly zero responsibility for the actions of individuals who lived four hundred years ago. The "pilgrims" came, they saw, they conquered; their descendents made and broke treaties. So had everybody-friggin'-else, including those peoples they displaced/killed/enslaved/etc etc etc. The only differences are of degree, geography, and hairstyles.
I'm doing the best I can to raise my children to be responsible people, conscious of their actions and impact upon society. Take what you need and no more. Be aware of where and, more importantly, who you are. I choose to look forward, not back.
So, I celebrate the holidays now that I celebrated growing up, and I don't apologize for it.
Hell, I even go so far as to take pictures.
