mapsedge: Me at Stone Bridge Coffee House (Raleighbird)

I think that - except for private to-do lists and things of no outside import whatsoever - private posts are sort of an oxymoron on an internet blog. As a result I debated for a long while whether or not to post this.  Ultimately, I think there are folks who will want to know what's going on, so here we are.

For the record, I'm borrowing from a few emails I've written yesterday and today to compose this entry.  I tried to start fresh for this post, but I like what I wrote before so by God and Roget I'm going to use some of it here.

---

I am rarely caught completely by surprise.  Yesterday was a rare moment.

I posted yesterday about my frustration at not owning a video camera, that one had come up on eBay that I'd looked at before but didn't have the ready funds to purchase.

Having posted that and done my venting I went on about my business, figuring that was the end of it.  About 1/2 an hour later I get a phone call from Michelle:

"Honey, I've never seen you latch on to a topic and not let go of it like this, so just buy the damn camera and shut up about it, mm-kay?"

Over the next couple of hours, I got several emails - and LJ replies - the gist of each being, "How much do you need?"

Shocked the hell out of me, it really did.  I was reminded in an email from Star that there are a great many people that love me, simple as that, and that I shouldn't be surprised.  Now, I'll admit to being accustomed to being loved with food; hands; mouths; misc assorted body parts, singular and plural, consecutively and concurrently; verbal expressions; Hallmark cards; and the odd small fuzzy mammal; but money?  That's a new one, especially for something that is not so much a "need" as a "want."

However, I'm not so stupid as to choke on pride, so I swallowed it whole and gratefully accepted any and all offers*.  As Katie has said to me, "Daddy, you need to get over yourself."  Yeah, my six year old, and THAT was when she was four.  You're right, Star.  She's smarter than all of us, sometimes.  Cuts through the bullshit quicker, too.

So, thank you.  For the support, tangible and intagible, all of you.  Thank you.

Ultimately, I ~did not~ buy the camera from eBay.  The offers made it possible to upgrade a bit, so I'm purchasing a camera from a guy who, 1. has a better camera than the one on eBay; and 2. has run into some financial difficulties and needs the money more than he needs his camera**.

All in all, a good deal for both of us.

It's a scary purchase given the size (and, if it weren't for taxes, it wouldn't be that bad, but being self-employed can really screw you), but, like the sewing machines I'm slowly selling off, I consider it an investment.

The plan, now, is to turn around and start making money with it as soon as possible, to pay back the loans and those parts of our bank accounts being drained for the purpose, and to pay for what I hope will soon be a supply line sufficient to create a moviemaking addiction.

And that's that.

* Note, please, that I consider each a loan to be repaid with interest.
** This poor man must be paying back some hu-u-uge Karmic debt.  Best I can figure is that in a previous life he destroyed a few third-world countries.  Single handedly...while strangling kittens...and reading Annie Proulx novels in nursing homes***.
*** Just read the first chapter of The Shipping News, and you'll understand why that's a bad thing.  Pulitzer Prize or not, it's a gawdawful depressing read.

I am super glad of this, for you are super-overdue for fun, fluffy things like cameras that are really wanted. :)

That's wonderful! I've been so self-absorbed with White Hart and then this wedding that I've missed a whole lot on here.

But I'm very glad that you've gotten it and yes, you are loved and you DO deserve it!

What kind of camera did you end up with?

It's a JVC GR-HD1U. It's a consumer level camera, but still a very nice piece of equipment. The one downside is that in digital video it will only do 16:9 widescreen in full manual, but that really doesn't bother me that much. The auto white balance isn't that great.
