if they're anything like the german marks, they're still of value. it's kind of like the $2 bill in the states. no longer in circulation, but still accepted and then retired once it returns to the fed. you should be able to exchange them without a problem. my sister gave me a bunch of german marks when i planned to spend my summer over there, so i had to do some investigating to see if they'd still be accepted. you should be good to go.
