For open mic nights, they say on the website "2nd and 4th Saturday"...they lie. You really need to call them on a Friday and ask if they're planning on having open mic that week. It's pretty catch as catch can.
When they have it, it starts at 6:00 or 7:00 and goes till 11:00, and it can be a pretty eclectic mix sometimes. When I'm there, I, of course, handle the Celtic part of the program. Back in the day, when they would stay open until 2 or 3 in the morning, Bob Lewis (one of the founding members of Devo) would come in and listen and play. He lives not too far from the Independence Square.
Most of the time it's pretty standard coffeehouse stuff, but occasionally, just occasionally you get some real winners. We had a kid once who played AC/DC on the accordian, another night a cellist playing Mozart. The only requirement is that the entertainment stay family friendly.
You Just Never Know.
The 17th is by invite only, at least for the musicians, although Karen and David (the owners) would put anyone on the "stage" at my recommendation if there was time.
