I can make guesses, though. Maybe, in Jamie's case, it's so that he can eventually learn to take what control he can of his sensory environment and (finding methods for the) meeting (of) his own sensory needs to cope with/compensate for it, because you CAN'T always be in a sensory environment that caters to you. And maybe, in Katie's case, it is so that she can learn that when your relationships matter, sometimes you have to at least try doing what doesn't come naturally to you, because it's what the other person/people need from you -- and that everybody flubs that sometimes, but not everyone always tries, and that is something about herself that she can control.
