Nothing is scarier than a gaggle of folks on a rampage. They catch an ideal like it is a fever and wanting to fit in, everyone just up and goes along with it, no matter how off base the idea seems. Organized religion is all about societal engineering.
Your example is dead on. Being raised Southern Baptist in Ft. Worth, TX, pretty much everyone else was going to Hell.
