Saturday, and nothing much on the schedule. Thank god.
Last night's performance was a lot of fun, made even more so by the presence of friends and chosen family, two of whom hadn't ever seen me perform live. The crowd was small, but as always, lively and generous.
I got flamed - in writing, no less, on my own sign-up sheet - over some comments I made about pirate groups at ren faires (you know who you are ;P). Lacking any articles, containing damn few conjunctions, and possessed of more than its fair share of grammatical errors, it is nevertheless a thoughtful reminder that maybe I'm not as smart as I think I am. It's wrong, and I'm going to frame it.
Stone Bridge Coffee House is changing ownership, and the new owner is much more receptive to advice than the previous. She recognizes where the problems were and has vowed to fix them wherever possible (too small portion sizes, too high prices), and has assembled a good group of people around her to help to that. I'll be taking over the website; Larry will continue to book the music.
I plan to create a press kit, but not today. In the meantime, I'm creating DEMO discs for distribution to various local venues. I need to run one up to Excelsior Springs to Willow Springs Mercantile, for instance, and there are a few wineries within easy distance that could probably use a one-man-band from time to time. If you know of any venues - bearing in mind that I'm probably not a good choice for a bar - drop me a line or have them visit my website at http://www.billMorrisMusic.net.
I need to find or cobble together a mobile sound kit. If I'm going to get out and play more I can't depend upon places to have a sound system I can plug into. I don't much want a big, single speaker box like many artists use. I'd like more input options, for instance, and the ability to have satellite speakers. I borrowed one at one point and it worked a treat, but there was no place to set my mixer. My brother Chris - audio engineer and sometime DJ - built a rig on wheels that had pretty much everything you could want: mixer, amp, cd player, speakers, all on wheels. All I really need to make that happen today is an amp and cables, and I probably already have enough cables.
Michelle's begun to call around and find out who books the talent are various places around town. We'll start sending/dropping off demos. Black Dog Coffee House has expressed interest.
Tonight, I'll be down at Shakespeare Festival, in costume begging for donations. It's always a fun time and I'm looking forward to it.
