There was a very close lightning strike, followed a heartbeat later by a loud, ear-splittingly sharp crack of thunder. Katie's little body, nestled under the covers on our bed between Michelle and I, twitched.

Me. Wow, that was loud.

M, to K. Did that scare you?

K. (in a small voice) Yes.

M. Yup, scared me too.

K. You jumped.

M. So did you.

K. Daddy?

Me. Yes, darlin'?

K. Did you jump?

Me. Nah.

K. Why? Are you too big?
