I admire and wholeheartedly approve of your resolution to change that family dynamic for your children.
Even though I come from a small family, we weren't close and I haven't seen some of even my first cousins in more than 20 years and will likely never see them again. My family of choice is pretty much all I have now.
Hrmmm...this is turning into a post of its own.
