Death is always a show-stopper for anyone who has decent feelings when it comes to visit someone you know - even if you only knew them briefly.
Many things in life worry us - What if I lose my job? What if I lose my house? What if my marriage fails? These things seem insurmountable to us when we think about losing them.
But we DO recover from these things. We Do regain ourselves and press onward. If we fail, if They fail, we go on.
Regardless of your religious belief, Death is the one big thing in life that there is no Do Over for; no second chance; no "Wait a minute. That didn't go as I expected. Let's try that again".
You believe you will find Paradise and a loving God who will welcome home his child. I believe I will spend some time contemplating this experience, and then get back in line for this E Ticket ride. We are firm in our beliefs in our own chosen afterlife.
But these are Beliefs. Death is a fact. A stone cold hard Fact. It is unavoidable and irreversable. That finality stirs things on primal levels in us all.
When Death takes someone we have met, someone we have known, it takes the detachment out of it. It makes us face it rather than put it 'over there' with other unpleasant things we don't have to deal with on a daily basis. It grabs our attention and says, "Deal with THIS, Bitch!" in a way few other things in life can do.
The fact that you are so moved by the passing of a man you only knew briefly only speaks to what a good and decent man YOU are, Mr. Morris. When the shock has worn off, try to hang onto that.
And keep caring about people like you do. In the great Balance of things, it matters.
