Fabric shopping with Katie

Paid a visit to JoAnn Fabrics today, shopping for fabric for a client and for myself. I took Katie, who is every bit of five years old, with me so Michelle could have a nap as soon as the babe went down for his.

I've been hard pressed to find fabrics that work in my mind for the part I'll play at White Hart, and I was very pleased to see one I'd not noticed before that looked like it might work.

"Aw, man, that's gorgeous!"

I stepped away from the cart where Katie was riding, and grabbed a corner to examine the fabric more closely.

"Jeez Louise," I gushed, "probably can't use it because of the color, but I could find something to do with it. That combination of black and gold is just begging me to make it into something."

From behind me, a quiet voice, my daughter, grounding me in a way that only she can.

"Uh, dad?" she says, perfectly collected, "You need to get over yourself."

hahahahaha

Yeah, she is extremely good at that.

I would like that very much. I've got a lot of pent up energy that needs expending somewhere. I'd have been able to see you on or about your b-day, but the kids have been sick, an altogether too common circumstance since Jami was born. Hoping for a get-together soon.

I'll get on the planning thing.

Sorry everyone in your family seems to be doing the "sick at the same time" yuck.

And I understand pent up energy syndrome...and you can expend it here almost anytime!

The hard part is when they say stuff like that when they're in trouble. You have the worst time keeping a straight face.

I have actually allowed myself to guffaw from time to time, followed closely by, "Ok, now you're REALLY in trouble."

No reason I can see that you can't use black and gold if you also combine it with a brighter color. I'm putting Mark (5Rings who is playing Walsingham for two weekends) in a black/silver/burgundy silk that I already have on hand so it might be a little dark.

But I trust your judgment...

I've been meaning to put the design online for your perusal. Since I've never really done Elizabethan dress, I'd appreciate whatever input you might have.

You betcha, I'd be happy to look it over. It looks like Bruce and I are coming through on a 3 day get-away for 'just the two of us' somewhere up that way this weekend..

I've IMd him to see if we can set aside a little bit to come and take care of that costume stuff but I think he's at lunch.

So that's a possibility...
