Diplomacy

[livejournal.com profile] mljm related a story to me yesterday about our daughter, K, five years old:

K asked, "Does J have bad dreams?" J is our son, who is 18 months old.

M wasn't sure, she replied, but he might.

"I don't want him to have bad dreams."

"Oh? Why not?"

"I don't want him to be scared," she said, earnestly. "He needs to be happy."

Now, before you melt onto your keyboard with the Gosh-Awful-Cuteness of it, less than ten minutes later, K hit her little needs-to-be-happy brother over the head with a plastic fishing pole.

I got to thinking, hey! That's just how international diplomacy works, only faster.

Theory vs. Practice

Let there be Peace on Earth...
until I don't get MY way; then there's hell to pay.

As soon as Good Intentions cost something, the whole paradigm changes.

That's a fantasic quote.

It is up there with something from Sue Thomas, F.B. Eye last night: "Martyrs don't wire bombs with timers. If they really wanted to die, they'd strap the bombs to themselves."

My first thought wasn't "aww, isn't that cute" but "oh dear- does that mean that SHE is having terrifying nightmares?" Yes, I'm a worrier. ;-)

Terrifying nightmares, no. The occasional bad dream, yes. The usual stuff about separation from her family, being "taken away" (no, we don't threaten her with gypsies :P ). For a while, ~death~ was a real issue, so we started paying a little more attention to her TV habits and started curtailing the programming. Channel locking is a great feature.
