Weekend Update

It was a mixed bag as weekends go.

The August Dormer Roofing Project of 2009 is officially finished. With the prospect of friends coming over on Sunday - one who hasn't been to Osage in years and one who's never been at all - I applied my energies to finishing the portion of the ceiling and wall affected by the leaking water. I have a little touch-up to do in the paint along the ceiling (you wouldn't notice if you weren't looking for it), but it's done and looks really nice.

That and a trip to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore was most of Saturday. That story, with an update on the shed project, is detailed here.

Sunday, Jami became feverish, hitting 101° or higher. Not sure what he's sick with, but he's a kid and the weather's been very changeable. Dinner with friends was postponed (bummer, that). By mid-afternoon I was feeling very out of sorts myself, but as I look back I think that was a product of a very bad sleeping night.

Dinner was chicken tenders made with Panko breadcrumbs, very successful there.

I have discovered the joys of MySQL and Wordpress. I've set up three websites so far: Bill Morris Music, Lezlie Revelle's Blog, and The Road Less Ordinary, a blog about responsible living, good food, and autism. What I'm learning there will serve me in good stead not only for personal projects but for work projects as well.

Having had a bad sleeping night last night myself, my sympathies ('course ours was a phone call at 3am...but that's a whole 'nother story...).

Looking forward to seeing what the shed ends up looking like.

Hehehe...yeah, you 'n' me, both. Right now, it's just a growing (though neat) pile of lumber being periodically snowed/rained on. I'm sure my neighbors to the West are appreciative as they're trying to sell their property.

I need to get it properly stacked closer to the driveway fence so I don't have to haul it as far. (What was I thinking putting it all the way at the back???)

I think, from my niece's experience*, I might try that someday, but not until they make the documentation easier to understand, or I get REALLY familiar to PSP and everything other majic wand they use to create pages.

Oh, and I HATE trying to figure out what "widgets" do AFTER the fact.

*I couldn't say no to a plea for help after she installed a widget, went live (by way of Godaddy's technical suppport) and fouled the SQL db so terribly that it shut the thing down. Sucked Rotten Eggs and re-confirmed my belief that Godaddy is not the place to be for anything web.

The beauty of Wordpress is that you don't have to know PHP or MySQL. If you have a webhost that supports both - webHost4Life is one - then you just install and go. Easy steps at http://wordpress.org/

If you want to experiment first, sign up for a free blog at http://wordpress.com/.

And, I agree, GoDaddy's services, beyond their original function of domain registrar, are shit. I tried it once, and killed the account after two weeks.
