Miscellaneous thoughts of no particular import...

Larry King was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart yesterday. Great interview - or non-interview, since Larry and Jon spent most of the time messing with each other.

Is it just me, or does Larry King look - with his long, thin arms and legs, and ridiculously large head - like a doll from a Tim Burton animated movie? Like Corpse Bride?

I know this is really geeky, but whenever I get an email with a subject like, "Increase your tool get unbelievable size", I hope deep down they're talking about my hard drives. I could really use a coupla-terabyte RAID array.

CFO and Lawyer Wife are gone for the weekend. LawOfficeSecretary is pissed that she has to stay the whole workday. Wah, says I. That's the difference between being an employee and being an owner. It's not like there's nothing to do, though I doubt any of it will get done.

Hearts In Atlantis is on my Top 10 list. The Green Mile is too. Both are based on stories by Stephen King. King's best writing isn't about monsters and demons: it's about people. The monsters are just set pieces. The Mist isn't frightening because of the creatures behind the glass: it's frightening because of the creatures that lurk in the characters.

We're going to Nebraska this weekend to visit the homestead and pay respects to the Ancestors. We may also make a stop at Morrill Hall at UNL. Jami's never seen a dinosaur skeleton in real life, and I wonder what he'll make of it.

I'm trying hard to justify my Facebook account. There's a whole lot going on there that I couldn't care less about, and I'm on only once a week, if that. I've been "friended" by more strangers than I care to count, and it just smacks of friend collecting, which I abhor. I also don't need virtual gifts, virtual snowball fights, virtual drinks, virtual anything.

And would someone explain to me why, if I want to send a message asking "who the hell are you?" to someone who wants to friend me, why I have to give that individual access to my personal profile for a month? Am I the only person who finds that mind-blowingly counter-intuitive?

The only reason I joined was to keep in touch with folks from high school, people I never see except for the odd class reunion. It's a tough question that I'm willing to leave unanswered, but not for much longer.

I hope deep down they're talking about my hard drives. I could really use a coupla-terabyte RAID array.

I just put in a PO for 2xTeradata 5550s and 2xTeradata 2550s along with 125TB of storage, some for our secondary SAN for archive storage and the rest for an active EDW/BI/Mining install. They'll be here towards the end of June. You can come out and pet them if you want.

You are a cruel, cruel man. :)

Facebook, don't rightly know how I feel about it...

Aside from keeping me accessible to a lot of people I know, and visible to many more I don't, I can't find a use for it. Sort of like LinkedIn® with a splash of Twitter®, a whole heap of social networking, and a user interface that's second to...just about every p.o.s. interface on the internet.

Near as I can tell, there's no way to communicate substantively with anyone. I described it to Michelle as being like a long, ongoing party: people in and out, interacting more or less at random with varying degrees of sincerity and substance. I can communicate better with LJ®, and frequently do :)

I'm looking at Dreamwidth (just 'cause) for an additional blog. I'm just about ready to leave facebook but so many people 'adore' that I'm there even though I rarely post and never do the silly interactive things...*sigh*
The price I pay for popularity *winkwink nudgenudge*

Dreamwidth looks interesting, but I can't really explore 'cause I don't have an invite code. That's a good idea, that code. I like it.

If I can figure out how to get and invite code...I'll let you know :)

So you guys decided to go out of town? Dogs ok?

Ya, dog's are fine. We're going to drop them at Michelle's parents' house sometime tomorrow. Then WE get to keep the cat when her parents go out of town for the wedding.
