After the storm

First: we're fine.  The house, aside from missing just a little bit more of the already time-damaged roofing from the back dormer, is fine.  Our neighborhood was largely untouched.

Half a mile away, however, there is a swath of Independence defined by a line drawn through Drumm Farm to the Arbys at 291 and 23rd Street that Just Isn't There Anymore.  The 291/23rd intersection proper - actually about 1/4 mile North of the former Arbys - was a mess of debris and downed business signs from a block away.  The Noland Rd bridge is closed again, criss-crossed with powerlines that the evening before had been up on the poles where they belong.

I was late getting to work.  The true aftermath of the storm for us was a disorganized morning and a freaked out Katie, who was up at 6:30 this morning and in the family room watching the local news for the weather report.  Nothing like watching a severe thunderstorm on radar in Hi Def.

So....did a twister touch down there, or what? How can that many buildings be leveled so close together on just wind alone? *confused*

I'm glad you guys are fine. :)

No tornado officially, though we did get about fifteen minutes of sirens: that was for the Grandview "tornado" I think, since sirens are usually county-wide. The newscasters kept referring to "straight line winds;" I'm sure a google search would turn up something on that.

According to the news this morning, it takes winds of ~110mph to remove a roof, ~140mph to shift a building off its foundation - and those are gusts, not a steady blow. Straight line winds - apparently - can be that strong.

Yeowch. I'll be googling that later, for sure.

M e-mailed me to let me know, this morning, but it's good -- if scary -- to get this report from you, too. Here's to filling the spaces between cricket chirps! ::raises her can o' caffeine to the sky, then to you::
