Thursday night

A few thoughts on this lovely Thursday night.

Katie has been doing equestrian therapy for about a year now. It's an organization called Jake's Club, for disabled/handicapped kids. Usually, someone guides the horse while someone else walks alongside in case the horse gets it in his head to do something stupid.

Tonight, Katie got to ride by herself, without a lead or side-walker. That's a pretty big deal: she was in control of the horse (Phil) with a proper bit, all by herself. Saturday, she's going to ride in a "show". I'll be breaking out the video camera and taking lots of video of the event.

She and Michelle came home to burgers on the grill, a simple meal. Ground beef, ground lamb, worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. I don't care for lamb so it was a good way to use it up. After supper I went downstairs to make a pair of tights.

Seamlyne is doing okay. Not quite as well as we need it to, but about as well as we can handle just now. I've said many times that dyeing the fabric adds a lot of time to the process, but because the edges of the fabric curl it also adds time to the actual sewing. It's kind of a pain in the ass, frankly, and I've altered my patterns so I don't have to uncurl the fabric: I just let the serger trim it off.

I really miss having the big serger I sold back in April. In retrospect, it would have been better to hang on to it rather than accept the pittance I was offered by its buyer, but at the time we needed quick cash and I didn't believe I'd ever fire up the tights making business again. Silly me. Seamlyne has enough money in the bank now to purchase the machine, and I think if I really put on my Bambi-face, Michelle would let me do it, though I know it wouldn't be prudent. We restarted Seamlyne to help give us a pad to land on should we stumble; there's no sense chewing into that when the machines we have right now are adequate.

I came to a realization tonight that I like seeing an order completed and ready to ship just as much as I like seeing a paid order come in. The tights I made tonight are in a shipping bag next to the front door, ready to go, little "Priority Mail" sticker on it down in the corner. I like the thought that in four days, in Charlotte, North Carolina, a guy is going to be trying on clothing that was in my hands tonight, and that he will most likely be pleased with the purchase.

Coming soon: Seamlyne t-shirts. No reason, I just think it would be neat.
