I was thinking of point #6 today as I was mowing grass. Some advice I gave my oldest stepson when he was getting picked on about two years after we moved to the States. I, too, resented my folks for not teaching me when the proper time to fight was, or how long "sticks and stones" was s'posed to apply before getting a bigger stick of my own. So when the time came that the boy dreaded going to school, I explained to him how to deal with it. He did, and there was a fight, and my boy won. But the aftermath....now, there's something to deal with. From the other kid's parents, from the school, and nowadays even from the police. And then the kid will generally get a bunch of his friends and they'll jump your kid after school at the ballfield, when there's no help around. Fortunately in our case the boy could also avoid trouble when he needed to by his glib manner and smooth talking.
Some points to consider long in advance of when you'll need 'em ;)
