The post as written, excepting the allegory, of course, is true. Mom was looking for the small Nebraska town she remembered, and took this man twenty years her senior as a link to it, this man from her childhood - who was a friend of her father's and in college when she was born. She went home, but it wasn't the home she idealized in her mind. J was 85 when they married, had been a widower for ten years.
Now that she is beyond his reach - though his appearance at the funeral was a spectacle (another post, that) - I'm finding I can let go of the anger and am trying to let him go, too.
